To Help With Fall Prevention, Elderly People Must Practice Awareness
Do you know a senior citizen who’s had a fall? It’s scary hearing about something like that, which is why bed fall alarms are so essential for fall prevention for elderly. Are you a senior citizen? You don’t want to have a fall either. Have you talked to your doctor about how you can prevent falls? Part of the solution is to always be aware. You know your limitations. While you don’t want to just sit down and not move around, you have to respect your body and what your limits are. Being aware is also paying close attention to your surroundings and not putting yourself in potentially dangerous situations where you can lose your balance.
It’s easy to fall into old habits or want to take the easy way, but those choices can cost you. You want to be safe, and you want to prevent falls from happening. It’s harder for seniors to heal, and the long healing process can be devastating. Other problems can start happening due to an aging body, and the next thing you know, your body can really start to go downhill. For fall prevention, senior citizens can work on doing many different things, starting with being aware.
Did you know that there’s a month for fall prevention that elderly people can celebrate? In fact, everyone can recognize this month and celebrate together. September of each year is all about senior fall prevention and awareness. One other way to be aware is knowing how big of a problem it is in this country. How many falls do you think happen on average each year involving senior citizens? What if you were told it’s well over two million falls each year?
That’s quite an enormous number, and by the way, that statistic is based upon just the amount of visits to the emergency room that are due to falls. Falls can cause all kinds of damage, including brain injuries and broken bones. Did you know that senior women are more prone to falling? In fact, it’s not just that they’re more prone to falling, but about twice as prone as senior men.
This means that senior women need to be even more careful. Remember, there’s a difference between being 65 and being 85. Plus, everyone is different, and that means you need to be mindful of your body and what it’s telling you as you age. If you need to take it easy for a day or two because something happens, take it easy. If you need to see your doctor about some type of mobility issue, see your doctor.
Being patient and aware is the best way to keep yourself moving. Mistakes can cost you your mobility, and that’s the last thing you want to happen. Keep yourself active, agile, aware, and well, that’s just the A’s!
